The Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo covers an area of 20 km2<\/sup>. It is located in a hilly area 10 kilometres northwest of Rijeka and at the same distance from Opatija, and only 20 km from the state border between Croatia and Slovenia. This is one of the local administrative units of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County that was part of the former Municipality of Rijeka before the Republic Croatia became independent. The Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo was formed on 15 April 1993 by joining the two local communities of Vi\u0161kovo and Marini\u0107i. This date is today celebrated as Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the time when it was established, the Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo had 6,918 inhabitants. The number had risen to 14,445 by 2011. The Municipality of Vi\u0161kovo is the second most populated local administrative unit in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County after the City of Rijeka.
