Kastav – Jelovičani – Breza – Stanić – Brajani - Kastav

Kastav is located on a 365-meter high hill above Kvarner. Over the centuries, it has preserved its valuable architectural and other monuments, culture and tradition, untouched nature, and also its rich history. The turbulent events of the last hundred years have had a special effect on the Kastav region, which was divided between the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia by the so-called Rapallo border. Remains of that period of Kastav’s history can still be seen in the forests of Kastav, Loza and Lužina, as evidenced by the remains of military facilities that date back to the 1920s. The bicycle route “Along the Rapallo border” will take you on a unique journey discovering boundary stones, trenches, bunkers and observation posts.

The route takes you from the centre of Kastav through the Kastav gardens, via Žegoti to Jelovičani, after which you slowly climb towards Breza. On this road, you will reach the former border crossing of the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. From Breza, the route takes you to Mačkov vrh (504 m), the highest peak in Kastav. If you climb to the top on foot, apart from the view of the Kastav region, you will be surprised by the remains of a bunker carved in stone and a former watchtower on the south side of the peak. You can continue along a combination of gravel and paths, among the dry stone walls through Stanić and Brajan, to Spinčićev breg where you will find another watchtower and soon arrive back in Kastav.
