This route, inspired by the legacy of the famous Croatian Frankopan family, connects Nova Kraljevica Castle – one of the most beautiful Frankopan castles, with the Old Town of Hreljin. From Kraljevica, we set off along the coastal walking trail towards Bakarac, while enjoying a view of the Bakar Bay and the tuneras (observation posts). These observation posts, which were once used to spot tuna and issue orders to close nets, today remain only as witnesses to the tuna fishing that was widespread until the 1970s.
From Bakarac, ascend towards the settlement of Hreljin, and then take the picturesque ‘Put Gradine’ promenade to the Old Town of Hreljin (321 m). The remains of the Frankopan medieval town will delight you with its strategic position and unforgettable views of the islands, Krk Bridge and Rijeka. After Hreljin castle, descend towards the hamlet of Mali Dol and then take the old Roman road back to Bakarac, meanwhile passing by the abandoned old cemetery and the church of Holy Trinity. Through the lush vegetation of the forest, you will descend to the bed of the watercourse and return to Bakarac through Turinovo Selo. By crossing the peninsula along Bakarački put, you return to the centre of Kraljevica, where the Nova Kraljevica Interpretation Centre awaits you with the story of the life and wealth of the powerful Frankopan family.
