Start exploring the rich material and spiritual heritage of the Zrinski and Frankopans, powerful noble families that marked five and a half centuries of Croatian history. They were counts, bans, warriors and poets, and they left important statutes and codes written in Glagolitic script as their legacy.
Start your exploration of the Frankopan castles in Nova Kraljevica Castle, a luxurious residence at the entrance to the Bakar Bay, which tells a story of life, power and wealth, but also of the tragic deaths of the last Zrinski and Frankopan family members. Inside the castle is an Interpretation Centre through which you can follow the development of historical events related to this powerful feudal dynasty.
After Kraljevica, you will start a slight ascent in the direction of Šmrika and Križišće, where you join the route of the historic Karolina caravan road, the first road to connect the mainland with the sea. Remains of history are woven into stone pillars along the road, serpentines and bunkers, while unforgettable views stretch out to the islands, the Krk bridge and Rijeka. You then join the asphalt road near the town of Plase and descend towards the Old Town of Hreljin, or the remains of the Frankopan medieval town, built on a strategic location to monitor communication between the Croatian mainland and the sea. The road takes you further through Hreljin and Meja to the Bakar stone walls – fascinating terraces formed by dry stone walls, where vines were traditionally grown and the famous “Bakarska vodica” sparkling wine was produced. The Frankopan story continues in Bakar’s medieval fortress, an imposing building that dominates the city. Visit the Interpretation Centre and awaken the spirits of past cultures. Spice up your walk around the city with a bite of Bakar’s “baškot” or Bakar Cake before returning to Kraljevica, which will round off your tour of the Bakar Bay.
