Get acquainted with the history and military strategy of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia by taking a panoramic walk in the Bakar hinterland. Built in the 1930s, there are over thirty bunkers and similar military fortifications covering this area. The fortification line of the Western Front, or Rupnik line, had the role of protecting the country from a possible attack by Italy. You will find the remains of reinforced bunkers with thick walls and loopholes throughout the old decorated mulatieras (military cargo trails) that stretch above the Meja – Škrljevo railway. From one of the most beautiful mulatieras you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea, islands, Učka and the peaks in Rijeka’s hinterland.
The trail starts from Sokolićevi dvori, along the old Crikvenica – Zagreb road, and goes around the nearby peaks – Trebestin and Matusajna. The sharp rocks that stretch towards the peaks call for caution when walking, but also remind us to wear sturdy shoes. With a beautiful sunset and a view of Kvarner bathed in countless colours, return to the starting point by walking a part of Herman’s path.
